More people will soon be eligible for rental assistance. Starting Jan. 1, the Housing is Recovery Pilot Program will lower the age eligibility from 21 to 18.
NewsChannel 20 had the chance to speak with an Illinois Department of Human Services spokesperson, and they said extending services to a younger demographic will increase their influence on community health.
The Illinois Department of Human Services spokesperson, Daisy Concentras said, the lack of safe and affordable housing is one of the biggest barriers to recovery from mental illnesses and substance use disorder.
Without proper resources, individuals cycle in and out of homelessness, jails, shelters and institutional settings.
