A new Commonwealth Fund scorecard reveals sharp differences in Medicare beneficiaries’ access to, quality of and affordability of care across states. The report highlights wide state-by-state variations in preventable hospitalizations, prior authorization requirements and care affordability. For example, preventable hospitalizations range from 14 per thousand in Idaho to nearly 35 per thousand in West Virginia, and the share of seniors forgoing care due to cost is nearly four times higher in Louisiana than in Vermont.
