The Illinois Department of Human Services, Division of Behavioral Health & Recovery (IDHS-DBHR) is pleased to announce upcoming training opportunities focused on the ASAM Criteria (4th Edition) Volume 2: Adolescents and Transition‑Aged Youth.
Phase 1 Training
This interactive training introduces the core principles and structure of the ASAM Criteria (4th Edition) for adolescents and transition-aged youth. It covers the continuum of care for substance use disorder treatment, emphasizing developmental needs, family involvement, and integrated care for co-occurring conditions. Participants learn how to apply updated guidelines for admission, ongoing care, and treatment planning using a youth-centered, individualized approach.
The training also explores adolescent development, risk factors, and the neuroscience of addiction to support clinical decision-making. It highlights the role of early intervention, prevention, and family support in promoting recovery and healthy development. Through case-based, interactive exercises, participants build practical skills and confidence in making care decisions and creating effective treatment plans.
Phase 2 Training
This advanced, one-day training is designed for clinicians and professionals working with adolescents and transition-aged youth with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. Using interactive, case-based learning, it focuses on applying the ASAM Criteria (4th Edition) in real-world settings.
Participants learn to develop holistic, trauma-sensitive, family-centered treatment plans that are youth-guided and developmentally appropriate. The training emphasizes objective, criteria-based decision-making and strengthens skills in level-of-care determinations and treatment planning. Prior knowledge of the ASAM Criteria is recommended.
