National Council for Mental Wellbeing

As rates of substance use and overdoses continue to climb, intersecting with the ongoing mental health challenges that millions in America face, public health officials are increasingly important to supporting equitable access to care and improving the health and wellbeing of the communities they serve.

The National Council for Mental Wellbeing is excited to announce the 2023-2024 Behavioral Health Training Institute for Health Officials Program, an initiative in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial Public Health Infrastructure and Workforce.

To advance knowledge around behavioral health topics, programs and practices that address the needs of the communities they serve, this national cohort of public health officials and leaders will participate in training and technical assistance opportunities to enhance and develop leadership skills and behavioral health competencies.

Now in its ninth year, this engaging eight-month professional development initiative will support public health officials with efforts to:

  • Promote health equity, address health disparities and integrate social determinants of health.
  • Increase and strengthen cross-sector partnerships between public health and behavioral health systems.
  • Build or enhance trauma-informed and resilience-focused mental health and substance use programs and care.
  • Cultivate crisis response, mental health resilience and leadership supports.

This opportunity is open to any public health official of a state, tribal, territorial or local governmental public health agency. Interested behavioral health officials must apply in partnership with an official from the public health department/agency located within their jurisdiction. Up to 22 health officials will be selected to participate.

Participation in the Behavioral Health Training Institute is FREE and includes:

  • Registration to NatCon24 (St. Louis, April 15-17).
  • An exclusive 2-day in-person training immediately prior to NatCon.
  • Direct access to subject matter experts.
  • Monthly webinars and workshops.
